I was interviewed on BBC Radio 5 Live about celebrity wines and winemakers this Tuesday, I’m glad I didn’t mention a certain French film actor and wine maker who yesterday went ‘Oui Oui!’ on a plane.
I was asked to contribute to the Drive Time show because Rock Legends AC/DC have launched a range of wines. The names of the wines are certainly arresting – You Shook Me All Night Long, sparkling moscato is my favourite.
However, it’s not AC/DC who have lent a rock ‘n’ roll edge to wine this week and put bad behaviour on the front pages. That’s been left to Gerrard Depardieu who was apparently caught short on a flight to Dublin and according to witnesses, took matters, ahem, into his own hands.
In preparation for the interview, I had Depardieu on my list as one celebrity who makes noteworthy wines. There are a few. From the world of film Sam Neil and Francis Ford Coppola are both behind some very good wines. Sport stars including former cricketers Sir Ian Botham and Bob Willis as well as golfers Ernie Els and Greg Norman are involved in the making of some high quality wines too. But it seems as though, for this week at least, all of the attention will be on the wine that Gerrard Depardieu might have been drinking, rather than on the very good wine that he makes.
